P-8I, A variant of 'US P-8A Poseidon' aircraft joins Indian naval defence
The P-8I aircraft, based on the Boeing 737-800(NG) airframe, is the Indian Naval variant of the P-8A Poseidon of the US Navy.
Boeing P-8I LRMRASW stands for Boeing P-8I long range anti-submarine warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft capable of broad-area, maritime and littoral operations.
Equipped with :
- Foreign Maritime Reconnaissance sensors,
- Indian Maritime Reconnaissance sensors,
- Anti Submarine operation sensors,
- Electronic Intelligence mission sensors,
- Anti Surface weapons,
- Anti Submarine weapons
The Indian Ocean region would be secured in the terms of maritime surveillance with the induction of the aircarft.
A contract signed in 2009 resulted in having the aircraft in india's defence system.

Indian navy is still to procure another 4 P-8I aircrafts.
